Symphony

This project was a very personal project
where I wanted to explore a bit of my own cultural heritage.

The idea mainly came when I was designing a vest that I wanted to embroider and I was unsure what direction to take.

I have been very vocal on the genocide that
is happening in Palestine and it has opened my eyes about my own Arabic heritage and I really wanted to lean more and explore ideas to create something that I can relate to. This is only the beginning of the new discovered journey. I am aiming to design more and learn more because I really enjoyed this little journey and I can’t wait to make a collection out of it.

Moodboard

I have traveled to many places and one of
the places
that inspired this project in particular is Morocco. I always loved islamic illumination art and islamic art and being an
Arab myself it brings me a lot of joy to learn more about my own heritage and culture which unfortunately is quite limited.

I chose to learn more about islamic art because it fascinates me and for a person that loves structure
and grid, this process will be a very satisfying project.
Sketches

Like all my projects, I usually start of by sketching an idea. I used my moodboard for inspiration to create my basic shape and from there I just added flowers and leaves that were inspired by my trip to Morocco.

I really wanted to sketch everything by hand on paper before moving to procreate. Usually islamic illumination art is only drawn by hand without the aid of tech. After I developed the pattern piece that I was really happy with, I then used procreate to trace it and play around with it.

Changes

Based on the original design, I changed the pattern piece slightly to create
a horizontal version to use it as an embroidery piece for a vest that I have designed myself.

Below you can see the alterations that I made to develop the design further
for my need.
Tryout

Here I wanted to see how my embroidery piece would
translate in the vest that I drafted and fitted myself. The idea here is to test out the size, the estimation of work time, errors and the overall look and feel of the garment.

I have noticed that there are some problem with this piece.
The edges don’t connect well, and there is a curve on the front panel of the vest and the embroidery piece needs to adapt to it.
Digital modification

After playing around with the patterns, I decided that
the best way is to make the embroidery pattern bigger rather than smaller on the edges. Not will it only safe me time and my sanity but also, it works much better. The vest looks more cohesive and expensive.

For the fabric choice, I am thinking of going for a navy
blue velvet and a lighter blue for the embroidery piece.

Work is still in progress.... to be continued
